The Viral Clip That Started It All
I’m not letting this one die down because just thinking about it pisses me off.
So picture this: two influencers, ShowMainKorea and AmyFlamy, post a video where they’re playfully pronouncing English words in what looks like an Indian accent and a Korean accent… and suddenly the internet EXPLODES.
Some viewers thought it was just quirky mimicry…but a lot more saw it as mockery of South Asian accents, and the backlash was very much real.
Too bad I can’t link the original video (because of courseeeee they deleted the video after facing so much backlash), so these TikTok stitches will have to do. But you’ll get the idea.
Giiiirlll, Just Why? ShowMainKorea Issues Short Apology Over Accent Video
First things first, many commenters pointed out that ShowMainKorea isn’t Indian. She’s Sri Lankan, yet in the skit it came off like a caricatured “Indian accent.” Fans couldn’t decide whether it was ignorance, humor, or straight‑up tone‑deaf content.
Many creators responded to the original video, prompting Amy to take down the video. It also cumulated in both ShowMainKorea and Amy issuing their own separate apology videos.
Take a closer look of ShowMainKorea’s apology below:
Hi, guys.
I would like to sincerely apologize for the video I posted earlier.
I grew up in Korea,
and I honestly thought Indians and Sri Lankans are the same ethnicity.Because of the misunderstanding,
video editing tools,
I used Indian-style English pronunciation.
I was actually basing it on how Sri Lankans speak.I now realize it looked like I was mocking an Indian accent,
and I’m really sorry for making anyone feel disrespected.I want to make it very clear:
I genuinely love and appreciate Indians as my neighborhood.
Country is culture is full and his people.I never intended to make fun of or insult Indians in any way.
Through this incident,
I’ve learned how important it is to better understand other cultures
before I create content. From now on,
I will be much more careful and thoughtful
so that my videos don’t hurt or offend anyone.Thank you to those who pointed it out and helped me realize my mistake.
I’m really sorry again. Thank you.
EDIT: On January 27, 2026 the original TikTok video was deleted off Showma’s account.
Reddit Was NOT Buying the Apology
If ShowMainKorea thought the apology would calm things down, Reddit said absolutely not. Commenters zeroed in on everything, from the awkward video edits to the geography excuse, and they were ruthless.
“Why does this feel like a ChatGPT apology?”
One of the first things people noticed wasn’t even what she said, but how the video was edited:
“Why the hell are there so many cuts in the video? Every other word has a cut before it.”
That immediately sparked speculation about the apology being scripted:
“Probably to read that ChatGPT script.”
The Geography Excuse Got Dragged
Her explanation that she thought India and Sri Lanka were the same did not land the way she expected:
“her excuse being that she thought india and sri lanka were the same is kinda funny to me 😭 its even worse bc shes sri lankan herself and her saying ‘i grew up in korea’ like they dont teach geography or have maps over there is just rlly funny”
Others were straight-up confused:
“Wait so she’s not even Indian? Or grew up in Sri Lanka? Just decided to wake up and mock indian accent for the Love of the game?”
And some weren’t buying the explanation at all:
“She was obviously mocking Indians like please 😭”
“This Apology Has Zero Sincerity”
Several commenters felt the apology came off as performative rather than genuine:
“Apology videos are just whack when it lacks sincerity. I wonder if there are really people who are buying it.”
“Yes a lame apology just like her accent. That’s even worse, so forced that one might think she’s constipated.”
Calling Out the Accent Itself
Reddit users also pointed out that the accent didn’t even sound authentically Sri Lankan:
“She’s Srilankan and doesn’t know that Srilanka is different from India. Bbfr. Also her pronunciation isn’t true to Srilankans too. That’s just how racists portray the South Asian accent.”
Accusations of Throwing Her Own People Under the Bus
One of the harsher critiques accused her of deflecting responsibility by blaming her own background:
“‘I will throw my people under the bus to save myself, because it’s more acceptable to be racist against my own people than someone else’”
Is Amy Really the Villain Here?
Now let’s take a look at Amy’s apology for the accent video. For the record, I couldn’t find her apology on her TikTok page. Not sure if she private or deleted the video, so take a look at the transcription below.
Hi, girlies.
Let’s talk about this video. So, as some of you guys know,
this video has been getting attention
because in the video it seems like I was making fun of the Indian accent.Firstly, about the part where it seemed like I was laughing at the accent comparison:
during the shoot, I was trying to keep the mood light and fun.
And even though it wasn’t shown in the final cut, my laugh was directed toward Showma
and the way she acted in the moment—
us just trying to be comfortable, not at the accent itself.I want to clearly say that anything related to racism is something I take very, very seriously,
and I’m always careful what I say or do
so as not to offend anybody while I make content.I wasn’t trying to make fun of anyone or an accent at all.
I was just trying to keep the mood light and fun,
but I understand how my reaction could have come across differently.
And even if I were in that situation, I’d be upset too,
and I am really sorry about that.As someone who actually struggled with accents while learning English,
and has many friends from many different countries and backgrounds,
respecting cultures and accents is very important for me,
and it’s not something I would joke about lightly—ever.I actually learned a lot from this,
and I’ll be more careful and more responsible with my content moving forward.
And to anyone who felt uncomfortable or hurt by watching this,
I am truly sorry.
My Two Cents on AmyFlamy’s Apology
I want to be clear here: Amy’s apology did what apologies are actually supposed to do.
She explained the situation in full, said the words “I’m sorry,” acknowledged how her actions could be perceived, and showed a level of accountability that was noticeably missing elsewhere. She didn’t dodge the topic entirely, and she didn’t pretend people were “too sensitive.”
That said, I am not Indian, so it is not my place to accept or reject her apology. That decision belongs solely to the people who were directly affected by the content. My opinion does not override theirs, nor should it.
What I can say is this: as far as influencer apologies go, Amy’s was clearer, more complete, and more accountable than most we see online. Whether it was genuine or strategic is something only time (and her future behavior) will answer.
Viewers React to AmyFlamy’s Apology: “Don’t Fall for It”
While some viewers felt Amy at least attempted to take responsibility, Reddit was far more skeptical. A dominant theme across comments was the belief that the apology itself was just another layer of clout-building.
One highly upvoted comment summed up the distrust bluntly:
“Don’t fall for them. First they get ragebait you into their account. Then they will apology (which they definitely didn’t mean) and now you forgive them.
But now they have your attention and they are famous.”
Others echoed the idea that apology videos are simply content extensions, not accountability:
“Yup, apology video is just more content to them, and drives even more traffic to the original video as well.”
Several commenters also pointed out that Amy’s visibility exploded after the controversy, with some arguing that most people wouldn’t have known her name otherwise:
“Well most who like to watch iShowSpeed might know her but yea other than that most wouldn’t ever have heard her name.”
Others shifted blame away from Amy entirely, insisting the main issue was ShowMainKorea:
“the real culprit is that sri lankan girl”
Some commenters were especially critical of the optics:
“I have no idea who this is but why does she have on blue contacts for a racism apology video 😭”
Others questioned why an apology was necessary at all if she truly understood the issue:
“What a fake apology video this is. If she knew that this was racist then why would she do it in the 1st place.”
Final SeoulClout Verdict
Beyond the tea and jokes, this whole thing accidentally sparked a serious conversation about how creators use accents in humor, something that’s been a bigger societal debate lately (e.g., people calling out casual racism when accents become the punchline).
Even mainstream voices have pushed back against that kind of humor before, saying it’s lazy or insensitive without context.
ShowMainKorea is the one left in the hot seat for the actual accent skit. Fans and critics alike are watching closely, some calling it tone-deaf, others saying it’s a teachable moment about cultural sensitivity.
Whatever the verdict, ShowMainKorea’s reputation took a hit, and this incident serves as a reminder that influencers can go viral for all the wrong reasons.
Online fame is tricky, and sometimes the jokes you think are harmless can ruin your online reputation.
Personally, I am disappointed, but I don’t expect much from online influencers.
